A Moment After/Before - 2025

A looped moment, before/after a photograph is taken, was merely recorded on a Mini DV camera; the footage, which has been discovered years later, is now 21 years old, shot briefly in a friend’s kitchen sometime between Dec 2003 and Jan 2004. Amirali’s attempt to apply the while layers to the frames manually was not successful, and the project was eventually shelved for years. Activation of the project was only made possible through Siavash’s generous offer to find a solution for how to track the Shakey camera and many moving subjects in this short clip (including a dog!).

A "true" Story - 2009/2025
In this lecture performance for Motavali [4} Expanded, performed in September 2025, Amirali Ghasemi explores the Tehran Remixed project, which he/ou sees as both the most successful and biggest failure as a photographer. This multimedia project was his response to distorted media representations of Amirali’s hometown, focusing on the vibrant lives of Tehrani youth during the last years of a reformist government in the early 2000s. Tehran Remixed aims to reframe documentary photography, telling stories without invading privacy, in contrast to the increasing trend of fine art photography used in political narratives about Iran. The project incorporates multimedia elements to recreate moments often overlooked by the media while maintaining a humble and playful spirit. Captured during the Khatami presidency, Amirali emphasizes the historical context of these photos, which are over 21 years old. As time passes, the gap between reality and these images widens, highlighting how both the subjects and the perceptions of Iran have evolved.
This Edition also includes an updated text revealing Amirali’s encounter with unmaed authorities regarding the project 20 years later and features a premiere of A MOMENT AFTER/BEFORE, the newest addition to the Tehran Remixed.
